The Heritage Canada Foundation has recognized Amherst Island as one of the Top Ten Endangered Places in Canada due to the threat of an industrial wind turbine development. In its explanation of the selection of Amherst Island as a site at risk, the foundation stated the “proposed site of industrial wind turbine power installation would overwhelm unique cultural and natural heritage landscape.”
Amherst Island is a rural community west of the City of Kingston (Ontario) about 3 km off the northeastern shore of Lake Ontario. Windlectric, a subsidiary of Algonquin Energy has proposed construction of 36 wind turbines to blanket the Island.
